Overview
This temple is one of the Pancha Bhoota Stalas, representing the element of fire (Agni). Shiva is worshipped as Arunachaleswarar.
History
Expanded greatly during the Chola dynasty in the 9th century and later by the Vijayanagara empire.
Architecture
Spread across 25 acres, featuring four massive gopurams. The eastern tower, Rajagopuram, is 66 meters high. The thousand-pillared hall is a major attraction.
Spiritual Significance
The Annamalai hill itself is considered a lingam. Girivalam (circumambulation of the hill) is practiced by thousands of devotees.
