Overview
A unique temple where Shiva is represented by an anthropomorphic idol (Nataraja) rather than the abstract lingam, representing the element of Space (Akasha).
History
The temple has existed since the classical period. Successive dynasties (Cholas, Pandyas, Vijayanagara) expanded it.
Architecture
The sanctum (Chit Sabha) has a golden roof. The gopurams are adorned with the 108 karanas (dance postures) from the Natya Shastra.
Spiritual Significance
One of the Pancha Bhoota Stalas. It also uniquely houses a shrine for Lord Vishnu (Govindaraja) adjacent to Nataraja.
