Overview
Varanasi is among the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, and this temple is its spiritual heart. The recent Kashi Vishwanath Corridor project has greatly expanded the complex.
History
The temple has been destroyed and rebuilt numerous times over centuries. The current structure was built by Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore in 1780.
Architecture
The temple complex consists of a series of smaller shrines. The main vimana is plated in gold, donated by Maharaja Ranjit Singh of the Sikh Empire in 1835.
Spiritual Significance
It is believed that a bath in the Ganges followed by a visit to the temple leads to Moksha (liberation).
