Sacred History

"The temple was constructed around 1250 CE during the reign of King Narasingha Deva I of the Eastern Ganga dynasty. Built near the Bay of Bengal coastline, the grand structure earned the moniker Black Pagoda among European sailors who used it as a key navigation landmark. The complex was designed as a massive chariot dedicated to the Sun god Surya, complete with detailed stone carvings and sculptures. Over time, much of the main temple complex fell into ruin, particularly the large sanctuary tower. The exact cause of its destruction remains a subject of debate, with theories citing natural decay or deliberate damage during military raids between the 15th and 17th centuries. Conservation efforts initiated during the British India era helped preserve and restore the surviving structures, including the assembly hall. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984, the temple continues to attract visitors globally and hosts devotees annually for the Chandrabhaga Mela festival. Its cultural significance is also honored through its depiction on the Indian 10-rupee currency note."
