Overview
Located in the ancient city of Ujjain on the banks of the Shipra River. The unique south-facing idol (Dakshinamurti) is found only in Mahakaleshwar among the Jyotirlingas.
History
The temple has existed since ancient times. The current structure was rebuilt by the Maratha general Ranoji Shinde in the 18th century.
Architecture
Maratha, Bhumija, and Chalukya styles of architecture. Features a massive spire and intricately carved pillars. The new Mahakal Lok corridor adds grandeur.
Spiritual Significance
Famous worldwide for the Bhasma Aarti (ash ritual) performed early morning, originally said to use fresh ash from a funeral pyre.
