Overview
The Meenakshi Amman Temple is the geographic and ritual center of the ancient city of Madurai. It is one of the largest temple complexes in India and a masterpiece of Dravidian architecture.
History
The temple has roots dating back to the 1st century CE. However, the current structure was primarily built during the Nayak dynasty in the 16th and 17th centuries after the original temple was sacked in the 14th century.
Architecture
Featuring 14 magnificent gopurams (gateway towers), the tallest reaching 170 feet, adorned with thousands of brightly painted stucco figures. The Hall of Thousand Pillars is an architectural marvel carved out of a single rock.
Spiritual Significance
It is one of the most prominent Parvati temples, where she is worshipped as the primary deity before her consort Shiva. It attracts tens of thousands of pilgrims daily.
