Overview
Situated on the banks of the Krishna River, it is one of the most sacred pilgrimage centers, unique for possessing two of the highest spiritual categorizations in Hinduism.
History
Its origins are ancient, with inscriptions dating to the Satavahana dynasty (2nd century CE). Sri Adi Shankaracharya is said to have composed Sivananda Lahari here.
Architecture
The temple complex is vast, with high walls resembling a fort. It has elaborately sculpted mandapas and a beautiful vimana.
Spiritual Significance
One of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Shiva and one of the 18 Maha Shakti Peethas of Goddess Parvati.
