Overview
Located in the heart of Thrissur on a hillock, it is renowned for hosting the famous Thrissur Pooram festival on its surrounding grounds (Thekkinkadu Maidan).
History
Legend says it was built by Parasurama, the sixth avatar of Vishnu. The temple has been a recognized national monument under the AMASR Act.
Architecture
Vast compound surrounded by a massive stone wall, four monumental gopurams. The main sanctum features wood carvings and 17th-century murals depicting the Mahabharata.
Spiritual Significance
The sanctum has a huge lingam covered entirely by a mound of ghee, formed by centuries of daily abhisheka, yet it never melts despite the heat.
